SAN DIEGO (January 29, 2019)—The Globe Guilders are pleased to announce Celebrating Couture 2019, their 29th annual fashion show and luncheon, presented by Neiman Marcus, to benefit The Old Globe’s artistic and arts engagement programs and to support the impact the Globe makes in our community and across the nation. Neiman Marcus is producing a special treat this year of a rare exclusive for our audience —they will be privileged to be the first fashionistas to view the West Coast debut of fabulous couturier Marchesa’s 2019 Fall Couture Collection, following the initial show presented at New York Fashion Week.

Vicki Zeiger, past Chair of The Old Globe Board of Directors, is Honorary Chair of this extraordinary and memorable event, joined by Co-Chairs Elizabeth Helming and Jo Ann Kilty, and Kim Neapole, President of the Globe Guilders. Celebrating Couture 2019 will take place on Friday, March 22, 2019*at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, with festivities beginning at 10:00 a.m. *Please note new date, as previous shows took place in August!

Guests will be greeted with a sunlit champagne reception at 10:00 a.m. in the glass-enclosed Vicino Ballroom with the chance to bid on silent auction items. Smartphones will be at the ready for the very popular virtual bidding opportunity through Gesture’s Give Smart mobile application (www.Gesture.com) that was introduced last year, and selfies will be shared at glorious Globe costume displays curated by Resident Design Associate Charlotte Devaux Shields. The live auction and opportunity drawing will begin at 12:00 noon in the Aventine Ballroom, followed by the fabulous Marchesa fashion show and delicious lunch. After the show, Neiman Marcus will present a one-of-a-kind boutique for browsing and shopping in the foyer.

Marchesa’s Fall 2019 collection was inspired by Scandinavian folk art, ranging from Rosemåling—a traditional form of decorative floral- and scroll-motif painting on wood, originating from Norway and Sweden—to the poetic and groundbreaking work of Karin Larsson (1859–1928). Married to painter Carl Larsson, Karin herself was an accomplished artist who, throughout her life, embraced and translated her contemporary culture into vibrant textiles, daring interior choices, bold colors, and beautiful plant and flower motifs. Bright yellow and green accents, and contrasting black and white in a variety of techniques—ranging from delicate threadwork lattice lace to oversized floral prints—mirror the eclectic traditions in hand-painted furniture, while delicate floral motifs reflect on Karin’s attention to detail and use of colors such as red, blue, and orange accents—and combinations of them all—in ornate scroll and floral threadwork embroideries.

The proceeds from Celebrating Couture 2019 will expand the impact the Globe makes in the community and will help make theatre matter to more people. Over 500 supporters of the Globe—including prominent philanthropists, heads of corporations, and representatives of major organizations—are expected to attend this important event benefitting the Globe’s artistic and arts engagement programs.

“The Old Globe and the Globe Guilders are so grateful for the support of and partnership with Neiman Marcus,” said Honorary Chair Zeiger. “Neiman’s offers so much for everyone, no matter the person’s style. I am absolutely delighted to serve as the Honorary Chair of Celebrating Couture 2019.”

All serious arts lovers and fashionistas are invited to support this can’t-miss staple of San Diego’s fashion calendar. Tickets start at $165. For information on reserving a table or a seat at the event, please call Joydelee Marrow at (858) 382-1672 or visit www.guilders19.givesmart.com or www.globeguilders.org/celebrating-couture-2019. About Marchesa: British-born Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig have built a global fashion brand through elegant eveningwear and one-of-a-kind couture designs. The duo met at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Chapman’s draping and design expertise paired with Craig’s textile creations, resulting in a business partnership and the establishment of Marchesa in 2004. The company's namesake is the noted eccentric European style icon Marchesa Luisa Casati. The collection, designed by Chapman, is coveted not only by celebrities, but by women of all ages. Based in New York, the Marchesa collections are currently available worldwide, and over the past 14 years, Marchesa has evolved into a full lifestyle brand that includes an eveningwear line, Marchesa Notte, Couture and Notte Bridal, a handbag and shoe line, and collections of both fine jewelry and fashion jewelry. In 2016 Marchesa opened its first brick-and-mortar store in the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai Mall.

The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for over 80 years. Under the leadership of Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and Managing Director Timothy J. Shields, The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 productions of classic, contemporary, and new works on its three Balboa Park stages: the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the 600-seat Old Globe Theatre and the 250-seat Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of The Old Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, and the 605-seat outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, home of its internationally renowned Shakespeare Festival. More than 250,000 people attend Globe productions annually and participate in the theatre’s artistic and arts engagement programs. Numerous world premieres, such as 2014 Tony Award winner for Best Musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Meteor Shower, Bright Star, Allegiance, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the annual holiday musical Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! have been developed at The Old Globe and have gone on to enjoy highly successful runs on Broadway and at regional theatres across the country.

Dedicated in loving memory to AUDREY S. GEISEL
The Old Globe and the Globe Guilders mourn the passing of Audrey S. Geisel, a dear and treasured friend of this theatre and a bright star in the firmament of San Diego’s civic life. Audrey’s relationship with the Globe began many years ago, and over the ensuing decades the theatre benefitted from her contributions as an audience and Gala committee member and exceedingly generous benefactor. Her influence will continue to be felt most prominently at Christmastime, when our annual production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! entertains thousands of San Diegans of all ages. That show’s message of community, family, and kindness—itself a beautiful legacy of Audrey’s late husband—will always remind us of the values that she lived and cherished. Even in her declining health, Audrey greatly loved helping the Globe bring her husband’s work to our audience. We will long revere the extraordinary largesse Audrey Geisel bestowed on The Old Globe and the city we serve. Our Board of Directors, staff, and artists extend our heartfelt condolences to Audrey’s family, even as we celebrate her life and good works.
