Globe Learning

In order to broaden our reach and make theatre matter to more people, The Old Globe will provide a quarterly series of professional development opportunities for our local theatre community of actors, directors, teaching artists and educators to connect them with visiting artists from our artistic and production season, strengthen the community network of theatre makers and support and advance participant skills in theatre-making, engagement and performance.

Two-Day Audition Workshop: Monologue Coaching and Mock Audition

Are you an actor who feels intimidated by the professional audition experience? Are you ready to step up to the next level of your audition preparation?

If this sounds like you, apply now for The Old Globe’s Two-Day Audition Workshop. This Globe Learning opportunity is for local actors with some experience who are interested in expanding their audition toolkit, gaining usable advice from accomplished professionals in the field, and building confidence and professionalism in their auditions.

Participants will receive personalized monologue coaching and the opportunity to use what they learn in a mock audition with members of The Old Globe’s casting team. Participants must be available for both days and should come prepared with two memorized contrasting monologues totaling no more than five minutes.

Friday, June 7, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.: Monologue Coaching Session

With guest instructors:

  • Patricia McGregor, director, writer, and deviser of new work
  • Jesse Perez, Director of Professional Training for The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program

During this working session, participants will split into two groups to work audition monologues with coaches, and then share the monologues with the group in advance of the Saturday mock audition.

Saturday, June 8, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.: Mock Audition Session

With members of The Old Globe’s Artistic Department:

  • Justin Waldman, Associate Artistic Director for The Old Globe
  • Travis LeMont Ballenger, Associate Artistic Director for The Old Globe

Participants will take part in a mock audition session with their prepared monologues. The session will culminate in a Q-and-A panel discussion with The Old Globe’s casting team covering general audition expectations, preparation, and advice.
