SAN DIEGO (January 31, 2017)—As part of The Old Globe’s ongoing commitment to programs that serve all of San Diego County, the theatre announced today that on Saturday, February 4, applications will become available online for the Globe’s 2017 Summer Shakespeare Studio for high school students—now named the Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio. The applications, which will be accepted through April 1, will be accessible on February 4 at www.TheOldGlobe.org/studio-application. The four-week program is a unique opportunity for rising 9th – 12th graders and recent graduates not only to develop foundational skills for reading, interpreting, and performing Shakespeare’s plays, but also to cultivate their own artistic voice through storytelling and creating original material inspired by deep, personal connections to Shakespeare.

Through a month-long process, students receive an intensive curriculum of acting, movement, music, and writing classes as well as training in voice and speech, stage combat, and text. Master classes are offered with Globe artists and staff, many of whom are among the leaders in their fields. These instructors seek to deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare’s writing and to use his work as a model for engaging the students with their own experiences. The Studio also incorporates non-Shakespearean material, such as modern music, original texts, and the participants’ own freewrites, in which the group brainstorms topics essential to the story, then breaks out to discover different ways to express them.

The Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio will run Monday – Friday, July 17 – August 14, and will culminate in a public performance on Monday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. This unique performance combines Shakespeare’s words, today’s popular songs, and original material generated by the Studio’s company. Through language, music, movement, and puppetry, the ensemble members create an exploration of Shakespeare for the audience.

Tuition for the four weeks is $725; however, the Studio admits students without regard to their ability to pay, and financial aid is available for all students with demonstrated need. All scholarship students will also receive a bus pass to help with transporation. Interviews will be scheduled for Friday, April 7, or Saturday, April 8. Pam Farr and Buford Alexander are providing a generous sustaining gift to The Old Globe and have named the Summer Shakespeare Studio in honor of Farr and her participation in numerous Globe programs when she was a teenager. Her fondest memories are of her participation in the then Summer Shakespeare Repertory Festival. Farr currently sits on the Board of Directors of The Old Globe.

The mission of Arts Engagement at The Old Globe is to make theatre matter to more people and to strengthen the connections between the institution and its neighbors. The Globe’s Department of Arts Engagement was created to share with individuals and families a chance to experience theatre, perhaps even for the first time.
