The Performance Annex is the only theatre that The City of San Diego both owns and operates. It is a 50 feet by 50 feet black box theatre, a physical asset and real estate parcel of the San Diego Public Library. It was developed in the 1990s as part of the Urban Village project, a private/public partnership between the City and Price Charities that includes the library itself, the park and recreation center, the retail center, affordable housing, and the office building on University Avenue that houses Price and a number of other not-for-profits and non-governmental organizations. The intention is that with technical upgrades and other improvements in the near future, the theatre will become the central feature in a larger cultural production facility.
