The Old Globe invites your participation and coverage as Globe for All celebrates four years of making theatre matter to more people! This talented company of professional actors will tour Shakespeare’s beloved comedy Twelfth Night throughout San Diego County to a wide variety of economically, geographically, and culturally diverse communities. The free Globe for All Tour begins Tuesday, October 31 and will visit 17 community partner venues new and old, from Oceanside to the South Bay, from Linda Vista to the Imperial Valley. Director Jerry Ruiz—who has directed premieres at Second Stage, Primary Stages, Rattlestick, Denver Center, Clubbed Thumb, and TheaterWorks—brings a twist: the production integrates words and phrases in Spanish into this complex tale of mistaken identity and true love.
Twelfth Night reimagines Illyria as a sunny, modern-day Southern California getaway for the rich and fabulous and their entourages. Crashing onto this luxurious scene is Viola, a Mexican immigrant who comes into the U.S. via the Pacific, but who is tragically separated from her twin brother Sebastian in the process. Determined to start a new life, she disguises herself as a young man and goes to work for Orsino—who is hopelessly in love with the wealthy heiress Olivia—and quickly falls in love with him herself. As Viola unintentionally gets herself and everyone around her twisted into knots, she addresses the audience in asides and soliloquies in her native tongue, adding a bicultural twist to Shakespeare’s great romantic comedy about people divided from their true selves, in one form or another.
Jerry Ruiz (Director) has directed the world premiere of Fade by Tanya Saracho (Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company and subsequently Primary Stages), Twelfth Night (PlayMakers Repertory Company), Mala Hierba (Second Stage Theatre), Basilica by Mando Alvarado (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater), Philip Goes Forth and Love Goes to Press (Mint Theater Company), Enfrascada (Clubbed Thumb), A King of Infinite Space and Sangre (SummerStage), Mariela in the Desert by Karen Zacarías (Repertorio Español), The King is Dead by Caroline V. McGraw and Rattlers by Johnna Adams (Flux Theatre Ensemble), and Waiting for the Hearse (Mixed Blood Theatre). Mr. Ruiz has developed work at Second Stage Theatre, Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons, Soho Rep., The Public Theater, Atlantic Theater Company, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and The Playwrights Realm. From 2011 to 2015, he served as curator for the Crossing Borders festival of new plays at Two River Theater in New Jersey. He was a recipient of the 2009–2011 NEA/TCG Career Development for Theatre Directors Grant, and he was a Van Lier Directing Fellow for Second Stage Theatre from 2007 to 2009. He received his M.F.A. from UC San Diego and his B.A. from Harvard University. He is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

Jaymee Ngernwichit (Costume Design) is a costume, scenic, and projection designer. She graduated from UC San Diego in 2017 with an M.F.A. in Costume/Scenic/Projection Design and in 2011 with two B.A.s in Communication and in Design for Theatre and Film Production. After a brief stint as an art director, costume designer, and production assistant in indie films and national food commercials, she took a wild tangent into the world of social work as an eligibility worker in Compton, California. Through this experience, she has gained an immovable fortitude as well as renewed interests in social justice and the importance of stories in everyday life as a source of inspiration. Her notable credits include Qualcomm Robot Dress (costume designer), Though It May Shift (costume and projection designer), the feature length indie Territory (art director), the short film Becoming Henry (wardrobe and production designer), the short film Mojave ’43 (head scenic painter), and the short film Dead Hearts (production design assistant).
Ariel Levine (Original Music) was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and raised in the heart of New York City; he now bides his time in San Diego. As a working musician, producer, songwriter, and composer, Mr. Levine has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of the greatest musical talent San Diego has to offer, and he can be seen playing in a variety of bands and at special events around town and beyond, most notably with his original band, Mechanical Royalty, which plays songs off of his upcoming debut album, Let the Machine Get It, due out this fall. When not composing diligently, Mr. Levine enjoys tinkering with vintage German automobiles and surfing.
Jess Slocum (Production Stage Manager) previously worked on the Globe productions of Ken Ludwig’s Robin Hood!, The Imaginary Invalid, Red Velvet, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Measure for Measure (Globe for All), Love’s Labor’s Lost, tokyo fish story, The Metromaniacs, In Your Arms, Twelfth Night, Buyer & Cellar, Bright Star, Othello, Water by the Spoonful, The Winter’s Tale, A Doll’s House, Pygmalion, A Room with a View, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, the 2011–2013 Shakespeare Festivals, Rafta, Rafta…, Robin and the 7 Hoods, Alive and Well, Sammy, Cornelia, Since Africa, Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,and The Glass Menagerie. Her Broadway credits include In the Heights. Her regional credits include Indecent, Side Show, Ruined, The Third Story, Memphis,and Most Wanted (La Jolla Playhouse) and Post Office (Center Theatre Group). Her San Diego credits include Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company, North Coast Repertory Theatre, and Lamb’s Players Theatre. She is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. Proud member of Actors’ Equity.
