The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, ranked among the top 10 drama schools in the world by The Hollywood Reporter, offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts program in classical acting with comprehensive training and performance work in Globe productions. The program is one of the most competitive in the country, with a two percent acceptance rate. Seven students are recruited internationally each year and receive full scholarships as well as stipends for living expenses.

Led by acclaimed actor, director, and choreographer Jesse Perez, Program Director and Craig Noel Distinguished Professor, the program’s curriculum focuses on performance skills for classical theatre, with classes in acting, movement, voice and speech, and literature, and summers reserved for work in productions at The Old Globe. Partnership with the Globe demands that students achieve the Globe’s formidable standard of artistic excellence and professionalism.

The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program was established in 1987 by The Old Globe’s Founding Artistic Director Craig Noel and University of San Diego Vice President and Provost Sister Sally Furay. Graduates of the program have performed extensively on and Off Broadway, in regional theatres, in feature films, and on television. They have also founded successful theatre companies, written award-winning plays and screenplays, and performed throughout Europe and Canada. One notable graduate is Jim Parsons, the Golden Globe and Emmy Award–winning star of “The Big Bang Theory.”

“You could probably count on one hand the major training programs that are affiliated with a major theatre company. This is a specifically classical training program that is very, very heavily centered on Shakespeare. It’s pretty unique nationwide.”

—Barry Edelstein, Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director, The Old Globe
