SAN DIEGO (May 6, 2022) The Old Globe is pleased to announce it will celebrate the holidays with two popular San Diego yuletide traditions: the annual production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! which will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and the Dickens comedic musical mash-up Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show. The Grinch will be presented November 9 – December 13, 2022, with an official opening night on Sunday, November 13. Scrooge will run November 18 – December 23, 2022, with an official opening night on Tuesday, November 23. The cast, creative team and ticket on-sale date for both productions will be announced at a later date.
“Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is one of the centerpieces of the holiday season in San Diego, and this year we mark its 25th Anniversary,” said Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. “That this moving and enchanting show has been delighting and transporting people for a quarter century is a cause for celebration, and as we welcome families to our theatre for another season of Seussian rhyme and holiday cheer, we also express our gratitude to Dr. Seuss and to the late Audrey Geisel for blessing us with this grand and beguiling gift of a show. We continue with another San Diego tradition this year, too, with Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show, Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen’s uproarious southern California riff on A Christmas Carol. These two shows, and all the celebrations around them, including the Grinch Christmas Tree on the Globe Plaza and the Tree lighting, too, are more ways that the Globe makes theatre matter to our city.”
The Grinch features a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. The original production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! was conceived and directed by Jack O’Brien, with additional lyrics by Theodor S. Geisel, additional music by Albert Hague, and original choreography by John DeLuca.
A whimsical musical based on the classic Dr. Seuss book, Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! features classic holiday songs like “Santa for a Day” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Max the dog narrates the tale of how the mean and scheming Grinch tries to steal Christmas from the holiday-loving Whos of Whoville. But the Grinch discovers there is more to Christmas than he bargained for and San Diego audiences will delight in how the Grinch learns the magic and meaning of Christmas. The Grinch will be presented at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. The theatre will once again be transformed into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash.
Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show, returns to the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Based on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, this Scrooge parody is set in San Diego and is written by Gordon Greenberg (Globe’s The Heart of Rock & Roll and Working, London’s Guys and Dolls and Barnum) and Steve Rosen (The Other Josh Cohen, The Curious Case of the Curse of Dracula). All the traditional elements of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol are intact – including the iconic ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future - in this reimagined holiday story with a very comic twist. Audiences of all ages will cheer as Ebenezer Scrooge rediscovers the true Christmas spirit in this riotous Dickens mash-up filled with music and laughter – and set in “wintery” San Diego.
Tickets for Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show will go on sale at a later date, to be announced. Details about the return of the Globe’s tree lighting ceremony will be released later this year.
