SAN DIEGO (May 9, 2017)—Performances begin this Saturday, May 13 at The Old Globe for the West Coast premiere of The Old Man and The Old Moon by acclaimed theatre troupe PigPen Theatre Co. Directed by PigPen Theatre Co. and Stuart Carden in their Globe debuts, this intriguing and inventive tale full of music and puppetryruns through June 18 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. The Old Man tends to The Old Moon, refilling the light that spills out every night. When his wife unexpectedly leaves home, The Old Man abandons his post and plunges the world into darkness. His eventful journey across land, air, and sea to find her reminds them—and us—of the unwavering power of love. PigPen Theatre Co. began creating their unique brand of theatre, music, and film as freshmen at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama in 2007. They have since produced their original plays in New York City and toured the country. They have earned “critic’s picks” from The New York Times, Time Out New York, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, The Boston Globe, and many more, and they have been ranked among the top ten theatrical events of 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016. They were the first company to win the New York International Fringe Festival’s Overall Production/Play Award two years in a row (2010, 2011), and they went on to win IRNE Awards (2012, 2015) and Joseph Jefferson Awards (2014) for their theatrical productions. In 2016, Sir Trevor Nunn invited PigPen to be a part of his first American acting company for a production of Shakespeare’s Pericles. PigPen’s debut album, Bremen, was named the no. 10 album of the year in The Huffington Post’s 2012 Grammy Awards preview, sending PigPen on tour to play to sold-out crowds across the country. American Songwriter premiered their follow-up EP, The Way I’m Running, in 2013 while the band was playing a series of concerts that became one of the most popular residencies of the past decade at the legendary Schubas Tavern in Chicago. In 2015, PigPen released their sophomore album, Whole Sun, performed at the return of Mumford & Sons to the Gentlemen of the Road festival, and made their feature film debut in Jonathan Demme’s Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep. PigPen is working with Writers House, one of the world’s leading literary agencies, to develop their debut children’s novel.

Stuart Carden is thrilled to share this epic story in his debut at The Old Globe. His recent credits include The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (People’s Light & Theatre Company, Chicago Children’s Theatre), Marco Ramirez’s The Royale (City Theatre, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis), and PigPen Theatre Co.’s indie–folk ghost story The Hunter and The Bear (Writers Theatre). He lives in the South Loop of Chicago with his wife, contemporary art curator Neysa Page-Lieberman, and their twins, Dashiell and Griffin. CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM BIOGRAPHIES

Alex Falberg (The Old Woman and others) is originally from Kharkov, Ukraine, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. After attending University School, he pursued his B.F.A. in Acting at Carnegie Mellon University alongside his fellow PigPen cohorts. His previous theatre credits include The Hunter and The Bear (Writers Theatre) and The Old Man and The Old Moon (Williamstown Theatre Festival). His television credits include Semyon on “Daredevil” and Nikola Tesla in The Men Who Built America.

Ben Ferguson (Callahan and others) was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He received his B.F.A. in Acting alongside the rest of PigPen at Carnegie Mellon University before moving to New York City in 2011. He has since created and performed shows with PigPen such as The Nightmare Story, The Mountain Song, The Old Man and The Old Moon, and The Hunter and The Bear.

Curtis Gillen (Llewelyn and others) has appeared Off Broadway in The Old Man and The Old Moon and in Pericles directed by Trevor Nunn. Most recently he performed in PigPen’s newest play, The Hunter and The Bear, at Writers Theatre in Chicago. Film credits include Ricki and the Flash and HairBrained.

Ryan Melia (The Old Man) graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011 and has since traveled the country with PigPen Theatre Co. Other shows created by PigPen include The Hunter and The Bear, The Nightmare Story, and The Mountain Song.

Matt Nuernberger (Matheson and others), a Chicago native, graduated with a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University. His previous theatre credits include Pericles directed by Trevor Nunn (Theatre for a New Audience), Henry V (Irondale Ensemble), A Little More Alive, Pocatello, and Tape (Williamstown Theatre Festival), The Old Man and The Old Moon (The New Victory Theater, Writers Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, ArtsEmerson, The Gym at Judson), and most recently, The Hunter and The Bear (Writers Theatre). His film credits include Ricki and the Flash, and his voiceover credits include commercial work for Raid.

Arya Shahi (Cookie and others) was raised in Tucson, Arizona, where he attended St. Gregory College Preparatory School. He received his B.F.A. in Acting from Carnegie Mellon University. Alongside his fellow company members, Mr. Shahi has co-created every iteration and appeared in every production of PigPen’s The Hunter and The Bear, The Old Man and The Old Moon, The Mountain Song, and The Nightmare Story. His additional credits include the film Ricki and the Flash directed by Jonathan Demme; theOff Broadway productions of Pericles directed by Sir Trevor Nunn and Exile directed by Lisa Peterson; and the video game 1979 Revolution: Black Friday directed by Navid Khonsari.

Dan Weschler (Mabelu and others) grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania, before studying acting at Carnegie Mellon University. After receiving his B.F.A., he moved to New York. His theatre credits include The Hunter and The Bear (Writers Theatre) and The Old Man and The Old Moon (Williamstown Theatre Festival, The New Victory Theater, Writers Theatre, The Gym at Judson), The Mountain Song and The Nightmare Story (PigPen Theatre Co.), Pericles (Theatre for a New Audience), and American Realism (The Invisible Dog, San Diego Museum of Art).

Lydia Fine (Scenic, Costume, and Puppet Design) is a New York City-based designer. She has been working with PigPen Theatre Co. since their days together at Carnegie Mellon University. When Ms. Fine is not playing with shadow puppets, she is working in various mediums, creating worlds and characters for films, music videos, live music performances, internet talk shows, photo shoots, commercials, and immersive events.

Bart Cortright (Lighting Design) is a New York-based video and lighting designer. His previous PigPen designs include The Hunter and The Bear (Writers Theatre), The Old Man and The Old Moon (ArtsEmerson, The New Victory Theater, Williamstown Theatre Festival), The Nightmare Story (Irondale Ensemble, Barrow Street Theatre), and The Mountain Song (Company One). His associate and assistant credits include Anastasia, A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder, Newsies, Bring It On, and Here Lies Love. In addition to designing theatre shows, Mr. Cortright works as a cinematographer in Brooklyn.

Mikhail Fiksel (Sound Design) is delighted to be back at The Old Globe, where he previously designed Water by the Spoonful, and to be working with PigPen, having recently worked with them on The Hunter and The Bear at Writers Theatre. Based in New York City and Chicago, his other recent work include projects with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Playwrights Horizons, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Pearl Theatre Company, The Play Company, Victory Gardens Theater, Albany Park Theater Project, AmericanConservatory Theater, Dallas Theater Center, The Flea Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Geffen Playhouse, and Second Stage Theatre. Libby Unsworth (Production Stage Manager) is thrilled to be making her Globe debut and to be working with PigPen again. Her Broadway credits include Les Misérables, The Visit, and Scandalous.
