SAN DIEGO (May 12, 2023) – The Old Globe is pleased to announce the full cast and creative team for Twelfth Night. Three-time Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall (Globe’s Much Ado About Nothing, Love’s Labor’s Lost) returns to the Globe to direct one of the Bard’s true comic masterpieces. Twelfth Night kicks off The Old Globe’s 2023 Summer Shakespeare Festival under the stars in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Performances begin June 4 and play through July 9, 2023, with the opening on Saturday, June 10. Tickets are available at www.TheOldGlobe.org.

One of Shakespeare’s most beguiling plays—romance, music, poetry, comedy, swordplay, and more! Shipwrecked and alone in foreign Illyria, young Viola masquerades as her lost twin brother and becomes the go-between for the lovesick Duke Orsino and the beautiful Countess Olivia. Soon Viola finds herself in the middle of a topsy-turvy love triangle with lunacy and laughs on every side.

“In the Shakespeare world we have an old saying: ‘Somewhere in heaven there’s a perfect production of Twelfth Night waiting for us,’” said Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. “Well, I’ve got some good news. We don’t need to wait ’til we’re in heaven to see it, because Kathleen Marshall and her amazing collaborators are making that production at the Globe this summer. Shakespeare’s absolutely breathtaking play, full of romance and poetry, love and yearning, and some of the funniest scenes ever written, is, in Kathleen’s hands, just thrilling. And seeing it outdoors, under the stars, on a balmy San Diego summer night, is about as close to perfection as one would dream. I can’t wait to share it with our audiences.”

The cast for Twelfth Night includes, in alphabetical order, Biko Eisen-Martin (The Old Globe’s The XIXth) as Orsino, Greg Germann (Fox’s “Ally McBeal”) as Malvolio, Naian González Norvind (HBO Max’s “Amsterdam”) as Viola, Esco Jouléy (Sundance TV’s “State of the Union”) as Feste, Jason O’Connell (Primary Stages’s Pride and Prejudice) as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Medina Senghore (SYFY’s “Happy”) as Olivia, and Cornell Womack (Broadway’s On Golden Pond) as Sir Toby Belch.

The cast also includes students in The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program: Jose Balistrieri as Sebastian, Luana Fontes as Ensemble, Madeline Grace Jones as Curio, Sarah Joyce as Maria, Camilla Leonard as Ensemble, Becca Lustgarten as Priest, Ensemble, Carter Piggee as Officer 2, Ensemble, Jeffrey Rashad as Valentine, Bernadette Sefic as Fabian, Vandous Stripling II as Officer 1, Ensemble, Emma Svitil as Ensemble, Jude Tibeau as Antonio, Michael Underhill as understudy for Sebastian, Orsino, Ensemble, and Maggie Walters as Sea Captain, Ensemble.

In addition to Kathleen Marshall, the creative team includes Lawrence E. Moten III (Scenic Design), Michael Krass (Costume Design), Stephen Strawbridge (Lighting Design), Melanie Chen Cole (Sound Design), Miriam Sturm and Michael Bodeen (Original Music), Morgan Carberry (Music Director), Ursula Meyer (Voice and Text Coach), Tara Rubin Casting/Claire Burke, CSA (Casting), Jess Slocum (Production Stage Manager), and Chloe Rose Schweizer (Assistant Stage Manager).

The Old Globe’s 2023 Summer Shakespeare Festival will conclude with The Merry Wives of Windsor, among the Bard’s wildest and most appealing comedies, which will be directed by Globe Resident Artist James Vásquez. Performances run July 30 through September 3, with the Opening on Saturday, August 5.

Twelfth Night will play in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre at The Old Globe in San Diego’s Balboa Park (1363 Old Globe Way). Performances play from June 4 through July 9, 2023, with the official opening on Saturday, June 10 at 8:00 p.m. The performance schedule is Tuesday through Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Schedule notes: There will be no performances on Saturday, June 17 or Tuesday, July 4, and there will be a performance on Monday, July 3 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.TheOldGlobe.org, by phone at (619) 23-GLOBE (234-5623), or at our Box Office in Balboa Park. The Vicki and Carl Zeiger Insights Seminar, scheduled for Tuesday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m., will provide patrons an exploration of the themes and background of the Twelfth Night from selected artistic company members. Post-Show Forum events will be held on Tuesday, June 13; Tuesday, June 20; and Wednesday, June 28. Community Nights at The Old Globe will provide festive opportunities to connect over refreshments and conversation for LGBTQIA+ community on Friday, June 9 and BIPOC community on Friday, June 16. In alignment with the State of California, which has removed mask and vaccine requirements for indoor events, The Old Globe will not require patrons to provide proof of vaccination or to wear masks while attending shows or events in either its indoor or outdoor venues. However, patrons should feel comfortable wearing a mask anywhere on our campus if they choose.
