Day of the Dead

Sunday, November 3, 2019
11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Copley Plaza at The Old Globe

For the fourth consecutive year, two of the Globe’s signature arts engagement programs—coLAB and AXIS—unite to celebrate the great Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) with a weekend full of unique activities and artistic expression, and the stellar premiere of Hermanas (Sisters), written by Daniel Jáquez and directed by Ramón Verdugo.

This is a participatory event for the whole family, touching upon some of the traditions that encompass this celebration of deceased loved ones. There will be arts-and-crafts stations, face painting, a drumming workshop, mini parade, singing, and dancing.

About Hermanas (Sisters): Ana needs to build a personal altar for Day of the Dead in her home in City Heights. Her sister Belén arrives to help her sort through the decorations and some unresolved feelings of grief. In the middle of building their altar and discussing the difficulties of being from two places, the sisters rejoice over memories of their beloved Mexico. They know today’s offering is a special day, because on this day the magic of this tradition allows the departed to take life by the hand and together walk in this world.

This free AXIS event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a performance of Hermanas in Spanish at 12:00 noon and a performance in English at 1:00 p.m.

AXIS are programs supported by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation. Financial support of The Old Globe is provided by The City of San Diego.
