SAN DIEGO (October 11, 2016)—The Old Globe invites your participation and coverage as Globe for All returns November 1 – November 20, in its third year on the annual roster, with Shakespeare’s searing comedy Measure for Measure. Acclaimed director Patricia McGregor makes her Globe debut, following glowing reviews for The Public Theater Mobile Unit’s Hamlet this summer. The free Globe for All Shakespeare tour begins Tuesday, November 1 and extends its reach this year with an additional week of performances and eight new venues that stretch across San Diego County in a wide variety of economically, geographically, and culturally diverse communities. The tour will culminate in two low-cost performances on Sunday, November 20 in the Globe’s rehearsal studios, part of Balboa Park’s historic House of Charm.
Measure for Measure is one of Shakespeare’s richest plays, mixing comedy and drama in a thrilling story of love and power. In a decadent Vienna, the strict, newly appointed leader Angelo wants to rid the city of moral decay—until he falls for a young nun pleading for the life of her brother and things get complicated. Justice, lust, hypocrisy, and redemption take center stage along with a wild cast of characters in a bold staging of this timely classic.
In addition to the performance, each partner organization is offered a Bard Basics workshop leading up to the performance. These workshops are designed to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of Shakespeare’s work. Taught by professional Globe teaching artists, participants will be introduced to Shakespeare, his work, and the common themes and ideas of Measure for Measure. Each performance will begin with an introductory pre-show warmup led by the teaching artists and end with a casual talk-back with the Globe’s Master Teaching Artist Lisel Gorell-Getz, who is also in the cast.
Globe for All presents free professional Shakespeare to diverse, multigenerational audiences in locations around San Diego County, with a cast of nine professional actors, a DJ, and four production staff members. Over the past two years, Globe for All has performed in military bases, homeless shelters, centers for the elderly, correctional facilities, recreation centers, libraries, and other community venues for nearly 2,200 audience members, many seeing theatre—and Shakespeare—for the first time. In addition to this year’s 17-stop tour, Globe for All will play at The Old Globe for two low-cost performances.
Globe for All helps make theatre matter to audiences who, for whatever reason, do not enjoy regular access to the professional performing arts. With production values scaled to non-theatrical venues such as gymnasiums, cafeterias, and multipurpose rooms, the tour gives audiences an intimate, up-close, and visceral experience of live performance and fosters a shared sense of community between performer and spectator. For some, the Globe for All tour is their first experience seeing a piece of live theatre, and for others, it is an exciting return to the art form. In addition to providing the community with free access to professional performances of Shakespeare, Globe for All enriches the theatre experience by offering free workshops and other activities. This model of theatrical engagement has grown very popular across the country, and our tours are used as exemplars by many other theatre companies.
Venues for the 2016 tour include return visits to South Bay Community Services/Chula Vista Promise Neighborhood, Fourth District Senior Resource Center; San Diego Public Library – Central Branch, Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, Chaldean Middle-Eastern Social Services, Father Joe’s Villages, California State Prison, Centinela, Naval Base San Diego, and Veterans Village of San Diego. New venues this year include Mary Fay Pendleton School at Camp Pendleton, The Old Globe Technical Center, Lemon Grove Academy/Lemon Grove Historical Society/Lemon Grove Branch Library, City Heights/Weingart Branch Library & Performance Annex, The City of San Diego Parks & Recreation – Linda Vista, A Reason to Survive, and Escondido Public Library, with an additional location to be announced.
The cast includes recent graduates of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program Makha Mthembu (Isabella, Soldier), Daniel Petzold (Angelo, Barnardine), and Christopher Salazar (Duke Vincentio, Elbow) in the lead roles, and Ally Carey (Pompey, Provost), Jake Millgard (Lucio, Froth), and Nathan Whitmer (Claudio). Joining them are local actors Lisel Gorell-Getz (Mistress Overdone, Mariana, Servant), Flordelino Lagundino (Escalus, Abhorson), Davina Van Dusen (Juliet, Nun, Friar Peter), and DJ Miki Vale.
The creative staff includes Sean Fanning (Scenic Design), Shelly Williams (Costume Design), and Jess Slocum (Production Stage Manager).

The tour culminates with two low-cost public performances offered in The Old Globe’s rehearsal studios in the House of Charm on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. These performances will be open to the public. Tickets are $15 for general public, $10 for subscribers, and are currently available to subscribers only. Tickets will go on sale to the general public, subject to availability, on Friday, October 28 at 12:00 noon.

Patricia McGregor (Director) has twice been profiled by The New York Times for her direction of world premieres. Her recent credits include The Parchman Hour (Guthrie Theater), Hamlet (The Public Theater), Ugly Lies the Bone (Roundabout Theatre Company), brownsville song (b-side for tray) (Lincoln Center Theater), the world premiere of Stagger Lee (Dallas Theater Center), and the world premiere of Hurt Village (Signature Theatre Company). Her other credits include A Raisin in the Sun, The Winter’s Tale, Spunk, Adoration of the Old Woman, Blood Dazzler, Holding It Down, Four Electric Ghosts, Nothing Personal, and The House That Will Not Stand. For several years she has directed the 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She is a Usual Suspect at New York Theatre Workshop, a co-founder of Angela’s Pulse, and a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow at Yale School of Drama, where she also served as Artistic Director of the Yale Cabaret.

The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theatres and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for over 80 years. Ally Carey (Pompey, Provost) performed at The Old Globe in Macbeth, Twelfth Night (in which she performed the lead role of Viola twice), Comedy of Errors, and Love’s Labor’s Lost. She performed in The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program productions of As You Like It, The Seagull, Clybourne Park, Trelawny of the “Wells”, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. She was also featured in the reading of The Last Match for The Old Globe’s New Voices Festival. Her Chicago credits include understudying Belleville (Steppenwolf Theatre Company) and Camino Real (Goodman Theatre). Her regional credits include Helena in All’s Well That Ends Well, Gwen in The Royal Family, Troilus and Cressida, and The Circle (American Players Theatre), Noises Off and The Winter’s Tale (Utah Shakespeare Festival), Writer 1272 and A Christmas Carol (Guthrie Theater), Georgia Shakespeare, and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. Lisel Gorell-Getz (Mistress Overdone, Mariana, Servant) is a Master Teaching Artist in the Department of Arts Engagement at The Old Globe and is absolutely thrilled to be making her Globe performance debut in Measure for Measure. Her previous San Diego acting credits include Jesus Hates Me (ion theatre company), Detroit, Exit Interview, Tortilla Curtain, Intimate Apparel, and In the Next Room, or the vibrator play (San Diego Repertory), Enron, Skinless, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, The Crucible, and Bluebonnet Court (MOXIE Theatre), 9 Parts of Desire (Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company), Biedermann and the Firebugs (Cygnet Theatre Company), Current Nobody (La Jolla Playhouse), Macbeth and Valparaiso (Sledgehammer Theatre), Now or Later, Valhalla, Wrinkles, Cloud 9, and Psycho Beach Party (Diversionary Theatre, also an Associate Artist), and Twelfth Night (New Village Arts). Ms. Gorell-Getz received her B.F.A. at Ithaca College and trained at the British American Drama Academy.
Flordelino Lagundino (Escalus, Abhorson) is an actor, director, and producer. He is the Artistic Director of Leviathan Lab and Generator Theater Company and recently held the position of Associate Producer at La Jolla Playhouse. As an actor, he has worked at Shakespeare Theatre Company, The Kennedy Center, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Perseverance Theatre, Folger Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, African Continuum Theatre Company, Talking Band, Imagination Stage, Washington Shakespeare Company, and ZACH Theatre. His directing credits include Sweeney Todd, Doubt, Yellowman, and Animals Out of Paper (Perseverance Theatre), Wearable Art Extravaganza (Juneau Arts & Humanities Council), and Flipzoids, True West, and Shakespeare’s R&J (Generator Theater Company).In addition, he has worked as a teacher and director with International Theatre and Literacy Project at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village in Rwanda. Mr. Lagundino attended the graduate acting program at The University of Texas at Austin and the graduate directing program at Brown University/Trinity Repertory Company.
Jake Millgard (Lucio, Froth) is a recent graduate of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program. He was last seen in the Globe’s productions of Love’s Labor’s Lost, Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors,and Arms and the Man. He also recently appeared in Shiley Graduate Theatre Program productions of As You Like It, The Seagull, Clybourne Park, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. His New York credits include Sex and Violence, On Campus, and Remembering Kimberly. His regional credits include Dracula and A Christmas Carol (Actors Theatre of Louisville), The Full Monty (Northern Stage), and Art, The Odd Couple, and Lips Together, Teeth Apart (Mount Baker Theatre’s Summer Repertory Theatre). He also appeared in the premiere of The Open Road Anthology (Humana Festival of New American Plays). Some of his television and film credits include “Grimm,” Pudding Face, Placebo, and Frank and Barry.
Makha Mthembu (Isabella, Soldier) has appeared in The Old Globe’s productions of Love’s Labor’s Lost as Jaquenetta, Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors, and Twelfth Night. She has also appeared in The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program productions of The Seagull; Clybourne Park; Trelawny of the “Wells”; Pericles, Prince of Tyre; andas Celia in As You Like It. Her Chicago credits include Judith in Sweetwater (Oracle Productions), Lady Montague in Romeo and Juliet (Teatro Vista), and Judith Smith in Belfast Girls (Artemisia, A Chicago Theatre). Her regional credits include Catherine in The Nightmare Room (Towle Theater). Ms. Mthembu received her B.F.A in Acting from Drake University.
Daniel Petzold (Angelo, Barnardine) previously performed in the Globe’s Love’s Labor’s Lost, Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors, and Twelfth Night. He has also recently performed in The Old Globe/USD Shiley M.F.A. Program productions of The Seagull, As You Like It, Clybourne Park, Trelawny of the “Wells”, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. In the San Francisco Bay Area he has performed in Tom Stoppard’s trilogy The Coast of Utopia and Jon Tracy’s The Salt Plays (Shotgun Players), Three Sisters (Berkeley Repertory Theatre), A Bright New Boise (Aurora Theatre Company), Any Given Day and Another Way Home (Magic Theatre), Oskar and the Big Bully Battle (TheatreWorks Silicon Valley), Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet (Pacific Repertory Theatre), and performances with the San Francisco, Marin, and Livermore Shakespeare Festivals. Davina Van Dusen (Juliet, Nun, Friar Peter) is an 18-year-old actress from San Diego who has just graduated from high school at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SDSCPA). Her regional credits include Princess Naüsicaa in Odyssey (The Old Globe) and 10-Year-Old Tommyin The Who’s Tommy (San Diego Repertory Theatre). Ms. Van Dusen has also been in several productions at SDSCPA. She is the current Miss Golden State Teen Queen of California of the Miss Junior America Pageant.
Nathan Whitmer (Claudio) was last seen at the Globe in Love’s Labor’s Lost, Macbeth, and The Comedy of Errors. He is a member of The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, for which he has appeared in The Seagull, Clybourne Park, As You Like It, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. He was seen Off Broadway in A.A. Milne’s The Ugly Duckling (Marvell Rep), and his other New York City credits include Macbeth (TitanTheatre Company), Bumbershoot! (New York International Fringe Festival), and Who Murdered Love (Theatre for the New City).As a member of Barter Theatre’s Player Company and Resident Acting Company, he appeared in over 25 productions in roles great and small. His other regional credits include A Christmas Carol, Reckless, and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park), The Royal Hunt of the Sun and 1776 (Texas Shakespeare Festival), and the role of John Proctor in The Crucible (Roxy Regional Theatre). Mr. Whitmer received his B.F.A. from Ohio University.
Miki Vale (DJ) is a hip-hop/soul artist and DJ as well as a member of Southern California-based rap duo Fifty50 with artist Kandi Cole. Ms. Vale creates a unique soundscape: one part hip-hop, one part old soul, two parts evolved artist and revolutionary MC. Her melodic flow illustrates a mental picture with each line and breathes new life into hip-hop as we know it. Her latest EP, The Good, the Bad, and the Lovely, was nominated in 2013 by the San Diego Music Awards for Best Hip Hop Album. Additionally, Ms. Vale has co-created physical and virtual spaces for women’s presence and engagement with hip-hop including but not limited to BGRRRLz Rhapsody, a month-long event in March 2013 that explored the impact of hip-hop culture on race, class, and gender; as well as all-female cypher videos and other multimedia archiving women in hip-hop. She co-hosts an online radio show, “The Lovelight Show,” and is the founder of SoulKiss Events.
Sean Fanning (Scenic Design) is a Southern California-based scenic designer with numerous productions across local stages. His previous Globe credits include the Globe for All tour of All’s Well That Ends Well, Full Gallop (Craig Noel Award nomination), A Doll’s House, Kingdom, and Plaid Tidings – A Special Holiday Edition of Forever Plaid. His credits with The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program include Pericles, Prince of Tyre; Much Ado About Nothing; Measure for Measure; Twelfth Night; The Winter’s Tale; The Two Gentlemen of Verona;and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His other recent designs include Manifest Destinitis, The Oldest Boy, Honky (Craig Noel Award nomination), and Everybody’s Talkin’: The Music of Harry Nilsson (San Diego Repertory Theatre), Seven Guitars, King Hedley II, Gypsy, Hay Fever, The Vortex, Dogfight, and The Whale (Cygnet Theatre Company), the world premiere of The Boy Who Danced on Air (Diversionary Theatre), brownsville song (b-side for tray) (MOXIE Theatre), and The Improv at Harrah’s and Menopause The Musical (Harrah’s Las Vegas). In 2016 he had the privilege of designing The Old Globe and San Diego Public Library’s exhibit of Shakespeare’s First Folio in honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Mr. Fanning holds an M.F.A. in Scene Design from San Diego State University.
Shelly Williams (Costume Design) has designed The Old Globe’s Alive and Well, Striking 12, the touring education production of Twelfth Night, and several years designing costumes for the Summer Shakespeare Intensive. As Assistant Costume Designer at The Old Globe, Ms. Williams has worked on many productions; some of her favorites include Water by the Spoonful, Richard III, Much Ado About Nothing, The Madness of George III, The Taming of the Shrew, Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (16 years). Elsewhere her credits include peerless (MOXIE Theatre), The Motherfucker with the Hat, Gem of the Ocean, Burn This, The Book of Liz, Bed and Sofa, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Cygnet Theatre Company), A Thousand Clowns, The Fantasticks, Cabaret, Man of La Mancha, As Bees in Honey Drown, and Moon Over Buffalo (North Coast Repertory Theatre), The Good Doctor (Moonlight Stage Productions at Avo Playhouse), Pippin (La Jolla Stage Company), The House of Bernarda Alba, Opal, The Kentucky Cycle Parts I and II, and The Triumph of Love (Patté Award for Theatre Excellence) (San Diego State University), and Easter and The Killing of Sister George (California State University, Fullerton).
