Literary Associate

The Old Globe, a year-round professional theatre company producing 14 or more productions annually on three stages in beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego, seeks candidates for Literary Associate, a new full-time position on the artistic staff.

Over the last decade, The Old Globe’s commitment to new writing has grown exponentially. Now, thanks to a generous gift, The Old Globe will be expanding its new play programming over the next several years, as well as developing new programs. The Literary Associate will play a vital role in that process. The Literary Associate will provide key support for the newly established Department of New Plays and Dramaturgy, including reading and evaluating plays for production, supporting the process of commissioning and workshopping new plays, and offering dramaturgical support to productions as needed. 

The successful candidate will have 3-5 years minimum literary or dramaturgical experience (or combination of school and experience,) very strong writing and play analysis skills, and knowledge and experience of the current landscape of both new playwriting and play development. Experience reading and evaluating plays is desired. The ideal candidate will be motivated and organized, and will enjoy working collaboratively. Occasional nighttime and weekend work will be required.

Custodian (part-time)

The Old Globe in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park seeks a highly motivated part-time custodian to work in facilities and on grounds, cleaning and providing general maintenance to all areas. Duties include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming hallways, stairs, office spaces, and theatres; emptying trash and garbage containers inside and outside; and cleaning debris and stains from plaza sidewalk.

Maintenance Technician

Communications Associate

The Old Globe seeks a full-time Communications Associate to create compelling, engaging print and online materials that make the case for supporting for the Globe, and collaborate on philanthropic communications strategies. Based in the Globe’s Marketing and Communications Department with a particular focus on the work of the Philanthropy Department, this position will develop branding strategies for campaigns; manage email communications for Marketing, Philanthropy, and Arts Engagement Departments; and write print and e-communications including donor newsletters, invitations to events, and stories of donor impact. The Communications Associate will assist with writing donor-related social media posts, Globe website content creation, and messaging content.

The successful candidate will have experience in copywriting and campaign branding and awareness. The person will be a creative storyteller who can adapt content and materials to align with the Globe’s mission and values. The selected candidate will be motivated, organized, able to balance multiple projects and tasks in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy working cross-departmentally. Excellent skills in Microsoft Office and CRM email software are required.

Marketing Assistant

Each season features a renowned summer Shakespeare Festival along with productions of classic and world premiere plays and musicals, Humanities programming including an annual new play reading series, and a dynamic variety of Arts Engagement programs focused on engaging with San Diego’s diverse communities including the annual Globe for All tour. 

The Marketing Assistant will assist and support the Marketing team in developing an informed, engaged, and loyal audience for Old Globe productions. Duties include prospecting for promotional opportunities; distributing marketing materials; overseeing ticket giveaway program; overseeing and assisting with marketing events; maintaining marketing archives and filing and assisting with various Marketing projects as assigned.

Successful candidates will have 1-3 years related experience, be highly proficient in Microsoft Office programs, particularly Excel; able to balance multiple projects and tasks in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy working collaboratively. Experience with Tessitura ticketing system a plus. Must be able to occasionally work nights and weekends.

Lady Carolyn's Pub Staff (Part-time)

The Old Globe Theatre seeks hourly part-time staff for cashiering, food preparation, and bartending positions. Must be available to work Saturdays and Sundays, as early as 10:00 a.m. or as late as 11:00 p.m. Will work approximately 10-25 hours per week during productions.

Pub Staff must provide world class customer service; be able to work in a fast-paced environment; have accurate cash handling skills; and have the ability to multi-task, prioritize and switch tasks when necessary. Food and beverage customer service experience and cash handling experience is required; Bartending experience preferred. Donor Engagement Manager

The Old Globe seeks a fundraising professional to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward annual fund donors up to $5,000. With a budget of more than $30 million, the Tony Award-winning Old Globe is a recognized leader among American regional theatres. Known for producing a broad range of work from Shakespeare and the classical repertoire to world premiere musicals and plays, the Globe annually produces 16 productions a year, including a Globe for All touring program that performs in community venues throughout San Diego County.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Philanthropy, the Donor Engagement Manager will manage the multi-channel, integrated annual fund campaign for The Friends of The Old Globe (donors under $3,000), identify and research prospects, and work with a select portfolio of prospects and major donors. Other constituencies may be added to the Donor Engagement Manager’s portfolio depending on the skills and interests of the successful candidate.

We seek a motivated, positive, and engaging individual with a minimum of one year of development experience, preferably in a nonprofit. The successful candidate will be an outstanding verbal and written communicator with strong people skills, be highly organized, a creative and analytical thinker, and enjoy creating relationships with donors of all giving levels.

Donor Services Coordinator

With a budget of $36 million, the Tony Award-winning Old Globe is a recognized leader among American regional theatres. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Philanthropy, the Donor Services Coordinator is responsible for processing show and event tickets and parking requests for Circle Patrons (donors of $3,000 and above), the Board of Directors, and other select patrons. A vital member of the department’s operations team, the Donor Services Coordinator also provides general support to the department, runs reports from Tessitura (the Globe’s database), helps solicit gifts when needed, and works closely with the Events Director, major gifts staff, box office, suite and valet concierges, and others to provide an exceptional theatre experience for all Circle Patrons and their guests. We seek a motivated, patient, highly organized, and proactive professional who is dedicated to providing the highest level of customer service.

The successful candidate will have excellent customer service and computer skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, will enjoy working with donors to build relationships, and is comfortable collaborating with members within other departments. Events and Suite Staff (part-time)

The Old Globe is seeking hospitable and conscientious individuals to join our Events and Donor Suite staff to fulfill two crucial roles; event support/management and donor concierge services.

As part of the events staff, individuals will provide hands-on assistance and/or coordination to the Events Director before, during, and after donor cultivation and stewardship events. Duties include, but are not limited to, event set-up and take-down, clean-up, bartending, and greeting. If assigned as an Event Lead, that individual will be the onsite person responsible for the operations and logistics of the event. This includes having the ability to follow a detailed event sheet, troubleshooting event and guest issues, and reporting a summary of the event to the Events Director.

As a Donor Suite Concierge, individuals will work shifts in the Lipinsky Family Suite, providing professional and high-quality hospitality to The Old Globe’s Circle Patron donors who are attending performances at the Globe.

As a member of the Events and Suite Staff, individuals will regularly engage with the Globe’s top-level donors and must exhibit a high level of hospitality and patience. This individual must be able to manage donor issues and complaints calmly and professionally, and to fulfill a variety of roles. Position pays $15.50 per hour plus tips and ticket privileges for Donor Suite Concierge and $17.50 per hour for Events Staff. Associate Technical Director

The Old Globe, San Diego’s largest regional theatre, seeks candidates for an Associate Technical Director. Responsibilities include drafting (AutoCAD), engineering, technical design, and project management. The Associate Technical Director works closely with the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director to plan and oversee the scenic construction process, ensuring safe and efficient solutions for all scenery and automation. This position is also the primary manager for the daily operations of the scene shop and works with the Head Shop Carpenter and Charge Scenic Artist to manage project work flow. 

Candidates must have extensive knowledge of scenery construction, structural /mechanical design, and scenery automation; progressive experience managing project and personnel; and high-quality, efficient AutoCAD drafting skills. The Old Globe produces more than 14-productions each year in three theatres, which typically include two enhanced pre-Broadway musicals. The scene shop is a fully equipped 14,000-square foot facility with CNC router capabilities and extensive metal-working capacity. The Old Globe Theatre is seeking a bilingual AEA Production Stage Manager on their production of Mala. Dates are 4/26/22 to 6/12/22.  The show will be performed in both English and Spanish.  $1,380/week, with travel and housing available for out of town hires.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated PSM experience at the LORT or equivalent level. The position is supported by a non-union production assistant. Essential skills include excellent communication, show calling experience, and problem solving abilities.

Draper/Tailor

The Old Globe seeks qualified applicants for a full-time Draper/ Tailor. This position reports to the Costume Director and is responsible for leading a team of artisans to create a wide variety of theatrical, historical, contemporary, tailored, and specialty costumes. The Draper/Tailor is expected to efficiently produce a large quantity of high quality costumes, achieving the Globe’s high production and safety standards. The Draper/Tailor is expected to work independently and as part of a team; communicating effectively with production, creative, and administrative staff in delivering support for productions and ensuring department success.

The Draper/Tailor will determine, with the Costume Director, the construction method required, estimate yardage and work flow, make patterns, cut or supervise the cutting of garments based on the sketches and research; and direct the assembly, fitting and altering, final application of fabric and trims of all assigned garments.

Qualified candidates should demonstrate at least 4 years of progressive work creating high quality theatrical costumes; a thorough knowledge of a pattern making system; knowledge of historical and garment making resources; and expertise in managing and training team members to produce the desired results and increased skill sets.

Successful applicants should be self-motivated, adept at problem-solving, and attentive to details and timelines. Flexible hours and overtime is required, Workweek is Tuesday- Saturday. Able to adapt to a changing work environment quickly and manage competing demands.  Employee will be required to stand, walk, crouch, and sit for long periods of time, excellent vision (color, close and distance), and lift up to 35 lbs. Other responsibilities include training and supervising assigned crews, work closely with stage management to ensure repeatable and effective support for actors and the production, and working with the Prop shop to provide extraordinary service to the artists at the Old Globe. 

Qualified candidates should demonstrate knowledge of theatrical productions, backstage operations, carpentry, troubleshooting, and repair skills in wood, plastics, fabric, and metal. 

Successful applicants should be organized, self-motivated, be able to work with a wide range of personalities, adept at problem solving, and attentive to details. They also must be able to adapt to a changing work environment quickly and manage competing demands. Due to the physicality of the job, the employee must be able to run the shows, work in low light, be aware of surroundings for self and others’ safety, sit/stand for long periods of time, discern color, closeness/distance of objects, and be able to lift 50 lbs. Head Stage Carpenter/Head Rigger 

The Old Globe seeks a qualified stage carpenter and theatrical rigger to lead stage operations on the Old Globe Theatre stage. The Head Stage Carpenter/Head Rigger shall be employed during rehearsals and performances and whenever scenery is rigged on stage and/or whenever scenery is shifted or flown on stage during technical and dress rehearsals, load in and load outs, and performances in the Old Globe Theatre. The Head Stage Carpenter/Head Rigger will also perform routine maintenance on rigging and equipment which is required to move or fly scenery.”

Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining a safe working environment for technicians, performers, and audience members during workcalls, rehearsals, and performances; collaborating with the TDs and Shop Carpenter to plan and oversee the load-in of scenery and rigging, automation, and mechanical effects; supervising and operating moving scenery during rehearsals and performances, maintaining scenery and effects during the run of show; and maintaining the permanent rigging systems, in order to achieve the highest standards of technical and artistic excellence.

Experience in practical theatrical rigging (counterweight systems, motorized rigging and fixed systems), installation and operation of theatrical automation (turntables, deck tracks, lifts and hoists), extensive theatrical carpentry, and management of backstage crews required.

Applicants must have knowledge of workplace safety practices, rigging calculations, theatrical mechanical/automation system assembly and operation and have the ability to read and interpret lighting and scenery plans, and a rigorous understanding of backstage flow, culture and processes. Must be able to routinely lift more than 50lbs., work at heights up to 50 feet.

Experience with ECTP (theatre) certification, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office suite, rope access/ fall arrest training, OSHA 10, and programming with Creative Conners’ “SpikeMark” preferred.

A flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and extended hours is required. Strong customer service and interpersonal communications skills with artists, technicians and managers is essential. Deep and broad technical knowledge of the craft and allied arts is desired.

Staff Automation Carpenter

The Old Globe seeks a skilled automation carpenter for a full-time position in scenic construction and automation. Automation carpenter will work collaboratively with the rest of the Scenery team to build, load-in, maintain, and load-out scenery and automation for 14 shows over 3 venues. The automation carpenter’s main duties will be prepping and maintaining existing automation inventory, loading automation systems into the theaters, and helping to design and build new components. Position will also be required to build traditional scenery as needed.  Position requires some long hours and weekend work.   

 

Candidates must have extensive experience building and installing theatrical automation; experience running automation a plus. Candidates must be able to demonstrate high-quality wood and metal construction skills; and have strong knowledge of electrical wiring, stage machinery and theatrical rigging. Must be able to stay calm under pressure and work well in a collaborative environment, and maintain a commitment to safety. Production Assistants

The Old Globe Theatre is accepting applications from interested candidates for ongoing Production Assistant positions.  Production Assistants work in a variety of capacities at the Old Globe as part of the stage management department. Applicants should have experience backstage and in rehearsal rooms. Public Safety Lead

The Old Globe in Balboa Park seeks a Public Safety Lead for a full-time, benefited position. The Public Safety Department serves as ambassadors for The Old Globe, maintaining the highest customer service standards for interacting with patrons and guests and helping to ensure the Globe is a friendly, safe, and secure environment for all patrons, performers, guests, and staff.  
 
The Public Safety Lead will assist the Public Safety Manager with managing all public safety operations and maintaining the safety and security of all patrons and staff on The Old Globe’s plaza, theatres, offices, and other company property. This position will regularly serve as shift supervisor, cover closing procedures, train/mentor Public Safety Team Members, and support the Manager in scheduling employees, interviewing potential candidates, and perform other duties of the Public Safety Team such as valet parking, actor shuttles, property security, and interacting with patrons and guests. The Public Safety Lead is required to be onsite during evening and weekend performances and events, as well as some holidays.
 
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, self-motivated and familiar with general safety and security procedures. The Public Safety Lead must have the ability to lead a team and de-escalate conflicts in difficult situations, and have a strong work ethic. In addition, the Public Safety Lead requires a minimum of 6 months supervisory experience. The hourly rate for this position is $18.00.

Public Safety Team (part-time)

The Old Globe seeks a part-time Public Safety Team Member for its theatre complex in Balboa Park. As a member of the Public Safety Team, the successful candidate will help to maintain the safety and security of all patrons and staff on The Old Globe’s plaza, theatres, offices, and other company property. The ideal applicant will possess excellent customer service skills, verbal skills to de-escalate conflicts, and the ability to be proactive and detail-oriented. Duties include but are not limited to securing/locking up buildings, patrolling theatre property and providing transportation via golf cart or shuttle van to our patrons, staff and actors, responding to patron inquires, and assisting with other activities onsite as requested by manager and leads.

This position is an in-house position and pays $16.00/hour plus ticket privileges. Must be available to work afternoons through late evening hours including weekends; some day shift hours will be available. Average schedule is 20-25 hours per week.

Ticket Services Representative

The Old Globe, one of San Diego's most celebrated professional theatres, seeks ticket representatives with excellent customer service experience and strong telephone and computer skills to work in our Ticket Office located in beautiful Balboa Park. 

Ticket Services Representative provide customer service to Globe patrons by assisting patrons with ticket and subscription orders over the phone and in person at the walk-up window. Ticket reps will work on show nights distributing will call and assisting patrons at the window. Ticket reps will become knowledgeable in the history of the Globe and current product offerings in order to best assist patrons.

Ticket Services Representatives are part-time positions working 16-30 hours per week. Office hours are 11:30am-8:15pm, daily; applicants must be available nights and weekends and be able to complete and clear a background screening.
