The Globe is proud to recognize QUALCOMM and
Vice-Chairwoman Pam Slater-Price and
the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors

as the 2009 Summer Shakespeare Festival Sponsors

Funding provided by the County Board of Supervisors at the recommendation of Vice-Chairwoman Pam Slater-Price

The County of San Diego Board of Supervisors provides Community Projects grants to non-profit community organizations that enhance the quality of life, promote tourism and provide economic benefits.

The Old Globe’s Shakespeare Festival, which offers 86 performances of three plays performed in rotating repertory, now ranks among the leading Shakespeare Festivals in North America and draws theater-goers to Balboa Park from throughout San Diego County, all 50 states and abroad.

Sustaining high-quality theatrical productions at the Globe requires extraordinary community support. The Old Globe is grateful for the Community Projects grant funding provided by the Board of Supervisors at the recommendation of Vice-Chairwoman Pam Slater-Price for the 2009 Shakespeare Festival. This funding also helps support associated education and community programs, including the Shakespeare Intensive for high school students, Shakespeare Production Guides, Shakespeare in the Garden and the Teacher Appreciation Series.

2009 Shakespeare Festival is sponsored in part by:

Karen and Donald Cohn
Production Sponsor for Cyrano De Bergerac

Karen and Donald Cohn have attended Globe productions for the past 28 years and have been actively involved with the Theatre in leadership roles for 17 of those years. Karen currently serves as Co-Chair of the Globe’s Capital and Endowment Campaign – Securing a San Diego Landmark. She and Don helped launch the Campaign in 2006 by making a significant gift, and in recognition, the new education center complex will be named The Karen and Donald Cohn Education Center.
Karen first joined the Globe’s Board of Directors in 1992, has served two terms as Board President (1996-1998), and has co-chaired four of the Globe’s most successful Galas. Don has been a long-time member of the Globe’s Board of Directors, and currently holds the position of Chair of the Board. As Production Sponsors, the Cohns have generously supported Othello, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Twelfth Night, Blue/Orange, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Doctor is Out, Wonderful Tennessee, Restoration Comedy and All’s Well That Ends Well.

John A. Berol
Production Sponsor for Twelfth Night

Having previously enjoyed Shakespeare at school and on stage, John Berol was delighted to discover San Diego’s enthusiasm for Shakespeare in Balboa Park upon moving to the city in 1977. Aware of the fragile dependence of artistically driven theater upon charitable support from individuals, John joyfully joined in with contributions including sponsorship of Dancing at Lughnasa, Voir Dire, Labor Day, Twelfth Night, Pericles, Much Ado About Nothing, The Two Noble Kinsmen, The Winter’s Tale, Titus Andronicus, Measure for Measure and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

American Express
Production Sponsor for Coriolanus

American Express Philanthropy’s mission is to bring to life the American Express value of good corporate citizenship by supporting diverse communities in ways that enhance the company’s reputation with employees, customers, business partners and other stakeholders. A long-time supporter of The Old Globe, recent support is provided through its funding theme to preserve and enrich our diverse cultural heritage. In 2007, American Express supported A Catered Affair, which was originally created by Paddy Chayefsky as a NBC teleplay in 1955 and premiered as a musical 50 years later at the Globe. This year, American Express has provided the Globe with a grant for Coriolanus, one of Shakespeare’s least-performed tragedies.

Kathryn Hattox
Production Sponsor for Cyrano De Bergerac

In 1997, Kathryn joined The Old Globe Board of Directors and currently serves as Immediate Past Chair, and on the Executive, Finance, Endowment and Capital Campaign Committees. In recognition of her leadership gift to the Campaign, the multi-purpose performance and training space located in the new Education Center will carry the name of Hattox Hall. Kathryn has generously supported the Globe each year as a Production Sponsor for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, Lucky Duck, Rough Crossing, All My Sons, The Boswell Sisters, As You Like It, Thunder Knocking on the Door, Measure for Measure, and All’s Well That Ends Well.

Barbara and Neil Kjos
Production Sponsor for Twelfth Night

Barbara and Neil have been enthusiastic and loyal patrons of The Old Globe since the summer of 1973, after moving to San Diego from Chicago. Their love of Shakespeare originally drew them to the Globe, so it is fitting that they are providing support for this year’s Festival. They have been long-time arts advocates in the San Diego community and regularly attend and support the San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Playhouse, La Jolla Music Society and San Diego Repertory Theatre, among others. Now retired, Neil owned and operated the enormously successful Neil A. Kjos Music Company, which continues to set the standard in all areas of the educational music publishing industry. Barbara and Neil’s sons, Mark and Tim, now maintain the family business and have inherited their parents' love of the arts.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCES

For More Information...

A season of theatre at The Old Globe is a potpourri of stories that give audiences a chance to laugh and cry, and to ponder themes that sometimes resonate deep within their souls. Our audiences also are a blend of different backgrounds and interests but they open themselves up to the many theatre experiences we offer.

Many theatre-goers want more than just the play. They enjoy hearing about how the show was produced and what the playwright was trying to say in writing the piece. They relish the opportunity to talk over the technical aspects of the lighting and the set design and to learn all they can about the thought process behind the direction.

For these people we provide several fascinating events that allow our audiences to connect with our artists.

The Insights Seminar is a popular program that draws a loyal crowd on a Monday evening before a new show opens (check our website for dates of upcoming Insights Seminars). For these seminars we ask our artists to join us for a lively discussion of the plays, their themes, the work that was involved in the production, etc. Insights audiences never know what to expect from these presentations, but they always walk away glad that they came. Recent Insights Seminars have explored the work of the Director, Stage Manager, Lighting, Costume and Scenic Designers, and many of our actors, too. The moderator begins the discussion with a conversation with the artist and then opens the proceedings to allow the audience to ask their questions. Because this event occurs before the show has actually opened, very few of the audience members have seen the play beforehand. This allows the speakers to give some background and to prepare the audiences for the show they will see. It’s a wonderful way to spend a fascinating hour at The Globe.

Our Post-Show Forum is another chance for audience members to talk to the artists but this one usually involves only the actors. On selected evenings (check our website for dates) the actors stay after the performance so they can spend some time talking to the audience. After the curtain call the actors head backstage to change out of their costumes and give the audience members who are not staying the chance to head home. Those that do stay are treated to a marvelous discussion about the play they’ve just seen. These talks often go much further than simple questions about acting. This is the time for audience members to grapple with the themes, emotions and ideas of the play. The chance to converse with the very people who performed the roles is a not-to-be missed experience.
For those who want to do their own pre-show research, our website is filled with artist bios, plot synopses, and now videos, photos and more. Our Marketing Department has a wealth of interesting information that will help theatre-goers learn more about the shows and it’s all available at the click of a mouse. For shows that will be viewed by students at our Free Student Matinees we also have Study Guides available from our Education Department. These documents are filled with background information and questions to consider for students and adults alike.

Teachers have long enjoyed our Teacher Appreciation Series that provides discounted tickets, dinner and a pre-show lecture by members of our Artistic or Education staff. Summer Shakespeare audiences come a bit early for performances just so they can listen in on our Shakespeare in the Garden lectures held on our lower plaza before the house opens for seating.

The Shakespeare in the Garden Pre-show Lectures in the Lower Plaza Garden (next to the Museum of Man) enhance and deepen the appreciation of Shakespeare’s work, and offer valuable insights into the productions at the Festival Theatre. Shakespeare in the Garden features Globe artistic staff and prominent local Shakespeare scholars. All lectures take place before selected Festival performances. Free and Open to the Public, 7:15 pm - 7:35 pm.

And for those who want to learn more about how a theatre operates, our BEHIND THE SCENES TOURS are a 90-minute treasure-trove of fascinating facts and an exploration of the working areas of the theatre that most people never see. Tours are available on most Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 am (call to check availability (619) 238-0043 x2145) or weekdays by appointment.

We know that no two theatre-goers are alike, so we seek to provide a variety of methods for enhancing our audience’s experiences at The Old Globe. Please join us for an Insights Seminar, a Post-Show Forum or a pre-show lecture. Or, check our website to learn more about our shows.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP

By CHARLES LUDLAM
Directed By HENRY WISHCAMPER
July 31 - September 6
Old Globe Arena Stage at James S. Copley Auditorium, SDMA

Who is Irma Vep? That's the mystery at the heart of this outrageously funny tour-de-force. On a "dark and stormy night," Lady Enid arrives at an estate with her new husband, who is under the spell of his deceased first wife and haunted by something that’s prowling the grounds. Strange things begin to happen around her and she soon discovers the mystery of Irma Vep, whose portrait hangs over the fireplace. A hilarious comedy that satirizes everything from Hitchcock’s Rebecca and Victorian Melodrama to The Mummy's Curse. This Obie-winning gothic spoof was once the most-produced play in America and now it comes to uproarious, high-camp life on The Old Globe’s intimate arena stage.
