Award Programs

Globe Honors recognizes and rewards excellence in High School theatre.  Winners will receive scholarships and may be eligible to participate in national-level competitions such as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) in New York City.

The 2010 Globe Honors awards ceremony will take place on
Monday, May 17 at 8:00 p.m.

    There are five categories in which students may compete:
  • Outstanding Achievement, Leading Actor in a High School Musical
  • Outstanding Achievement, Leading Actress in a High School Musical
  • Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre
  • Outstanding Achievement in Spoken Theatre
  • Outstanding Achievement in Technical Theatre
    ELIGIBILITY:
  • Must be currently enrolled in grades 9 – 12 in a public, private, charter, or home school in San Diego County.
  • To compete in the Leading Actor or Actress category, students must have played the lead in their school’s musical production in the 2009 – 2010 school year.  (School show must open by June 1, 2010.)
  • Must have performed in a theatre production at school or theatre organization.
  • Must be a San Diego County resident.
  • Must have a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average.
    REQUIREMENTS:
  • To compete in the Leading Actor or Actress category, students must be available for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards event scheduled for
    June 23 – June 29, 2010.
  • If selected for the NHSMTA, winners will travel all expenses paid to NY for the competition.
  • Applicants interested in competing in any of the performance categories must be available for:
  • Open Call on May 1, 2010.
  • Semis and Finals (if selected) competition to be presented on stage at The Old Globe on May 17, 2010 (participants will be expected to be at The Old Globe from 4:00-10:00 p.m.).
  • Applicants interested in competing in the Technical Theatre category must be available for an interview (date TBD) and must also attend the Globe Honors presentation on
    May 17, 2010.
    TO AUDITION, YOU MUST:
  • Send an email to GlobeLearning@TheOldGlobe.org. You will receive an email with your audition time, instructions and directions.
  • If auditioning in the Leading Actor or Actress category, bring proof of your performance, or intent to perform, in your school musical (letter from school principal, director of show, or a playbill from the production are acceptable forms of proof).
  • If auditioning in the Leading Actor or Actress category be prepared to sing 2 songs (16 bars of song from your school musical and 16 bars from a musical of your choice).
  • If auditioning in the Musical Theatre category, be prepared to sing 16 bars each of 2 contrasting musical theatre songs.
  • Bring sheet music for the song selections – AN ACCOMPANIST WILL BE PROVIDED – NO TAPED MUSIC and NO OUTSIDE ACCOMPANISTS allowed.
  • If auditioning in the Spoken Theatre category, be prepared to perform a classical monologue (from a play written before 1910; no original material) and a contemporary monologue (from a play written after 1910; no original material).
  • If auditioning in the Musical Theatre or Spoken Theatre category, bring a signed confirmation of show participation (this will be emailed upon request for audition).
  • Bring a headshot (or recent 8 x 10 photo); Resume listing full contact information (name, mailing address, email address, phone number, Parent/Guardian name and contact information); related theatre experience and training; name of high school; date of birth.
  • Bring a copy of most recent report card showing minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Bring a signed Media Release (this will be emailed upon request for audition).
    TO COMPETE IN THE TECHNICAL THEATRE CATEGORY, YOU MUST:
  • Send a request for an interview to: GlobeLearning@TheOldGlobe.org. You will receive an email with your interview time, instructions and directions.
  • Submit a portfolio that contains the following:
  • A letter of recommendation from principal, teacher, or director of school production(s).
  • A 350-word essay explaining why your job played a vital role in the production(s) you participated in.
  • At least three 8x10 color photos of the work you did on the production(s).
  • Any renderings or plans of designs that you created for the production(s).  (Copies are acceptable.)
  • A copy of most recent report card showing minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • For Stage Managers, include 2-3 pages of your script showing blocking notations & cues.
  • Portfolio must be received by The Old Globe by April 30, 2010.

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SHOW CHOIRS AND
MUSICAL THEATRE GROUPS!

The Old Globe is seeking High School Show Choirs and/or Musical Theatre Groups to each perform a 3-minute musical number during Globe Honors, The Old Globe’s Awards program for High School students, on Monday, May 17, 2010 at 8:00pm at the Old Globe Theatre. Interested schools should send a letter of interest and a 3-minute DVD of their choir or musical group performance to:

Application materials are due on Friday, March 26th, 2010.
Please note that materials will not be returned.

    APPLICATION GUIDELINES:
  • Groups should have a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 20 people.
  • Groups must belong to a High School in San Diego County.
  • Groups must be supervised by a Faculty Advisor or Teacher.
  • Groups must be able to provide either the piano accompaniment sheet music or a CD recording of their music.
  • Musical number should be from a musical theatre show (or shows, if performing a medley).
  • Upon acceptance by The Old Globe groups must commit to performing on May 17 at 8:00pm. (Groups must arrive by 6:00pm.)
  • Groups must be able to provide their own transportation to and from The Old Globe.
  • Groups will be expected to rehearse on their own schedule to prepare for May 17.
  • There is no financial compensation for participation in this event.
  • If accepted, your group will be notified by April 9th, 2010.
