About Us

Interns

While The Old Globe does not offer a formal internship program, individual departments sometimes have openings for interns for various projects. All internships are unpaid unless otherwise noted.

Electrics Internship

The Old Globe Theatre seeks applicants for a paid internship in the Lighting Department. This internship is designed as an introduction to theatrical electrician and stagehand work and has been made possible through a grant from the James Irvine foundation. The purpose of the grant is to provide internship opportunities to individuals from underserved communities in San Diego who are recent high school graduates, just entering the workforce, or military re-entering the workforce.

The intern will have the opportunity to learn both lighting industry standards and good work habits by working directly with experienced professionals under the supervision of the Master Electricians and the Lighting Director. The intern can expect to learn about entertainment electrician practices, lighting equipment, how to read a light plot, basic hand tool use, and theatre stage terminology. Responsibilities will include assisting with load-in, hang, focus, tech notes, maintenance, work space upkeep, and strike.

Applicants must be residents of San Diego, high school graduates or equivalent and have interest in technical theatre. Applicants must also be available to work 24-40 hours per week (daytime and evenings) through July.

Technical Center Internships

The Old Globe Theatre is seeking applicants for paid internships in the Scenic Department. These internships are designed as an introduction to technical theatre and have been made possible through a grant from the James Irvine foundation. The purpose of the grant is to provide internship opportunities to individuals from underserved communities who are recent high school graduates or just entering the workforce.

Interns will have the opportunity to learn both practical craft skills and good work habits by working alongside experienced theatrical craftspersons. Interns can expect to learn shop maintenance skills, basic hand tool use, power tool skills, basic painting techniques and theatrical construction methods. Interns will be exposed to all daily activities from material handling, layout and assembly of scenic units, finish prep, painting, and shop clean up.

Applicants must be residents of San Diego, high school graduates or equivalent and have interest in technical theatre; interest and experience in carpentry, painting, or metalworking; and have an interest in theatre. Applicants must also be available to work 28-40 hours per week (between Monday and Friday) beginning at 8:00 a.m. each day, for a 10-week commitment.

Marketing Internships

The Old Globe Theatre seeks applicants for paid internships in the Marketing Department. These internships are designed as an introduction to marketing for theatre and has been made possible through a grant from the James Irvine foundation. The purpose of the grant is to provide internship opportunities to individuals from underserved communities who are recent high school graduates or just entering the workforce. Interns will have the opportunity to learn specific skills for the theatre industry as well as good work habits by working directly with experienced professionals.

Interns will work with The Old Globe’s marketing team and assist with the marketing efforts for The Old Globe’s productions including distributing posters and flyers, promoting productions at local street fairs, assisting at marketing events and providing administrative support. Applicants must have an interest in learning about theatre, but no prior experience is required. Internships will last 8-10 weeks.

Stage Management Internship

We are currently accepting stage management internship applications for the 2013-2014 season. There is one internship available on Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! from October 18 through November 21. There is one internship available on The Winter’s Tale from December 30, 2013 until February 21, 2014. Spring 2014 dates will be announced shortly.

Applicants should have a strong interest in professional stage management. Interns will work alongside AEA stage managers throughout all aspects of the rehearsal process. Interns will be involved in daily rehearsals, technical rehearsals, production meetings, and understudy rehearsals. There will be opportunities to observe the calling of shows, backstage operations, etc. The Old Globe is one of the country’s finest regional theatres, attracting nationally known actors, directors and designers. The stage management internship is a full-time commitment, 6 days a week. A typical internship lasts 8 weeks, though the length of internship could be adapted to fit school schedules.

Academic Credit

It is the responsibility of the intern to coordinate class credit with the intern’s school. The Old Globe will be happy to cooperate with your institution to complete any necessary paperwork.

Compensation

At this time, stage management internships at the Old Globe are not paid positions. Interns will be considered company members, however, and will receive other perks such as complimentary tickets and free entrance to Balboa Park attractions.
